Maintain momentum in your language learning with this nifty trick

At the beginning, learning a language is exciting. But after a while, maintaining motivation can be tough.

When time is short, you can keep up your language by devising a 5-minute menu and doing your MVA on most days.

You’ll be surprised by the progress you make and how good that feels.

I can help you get started.

When you have more time in your day for language training, having a theme is a nifty way to stay on track.

Here’s how.

Pick a topic that piques your interest. It could be: a person, place, event, food, invention, creation, movement, technology, etc.

Design a framework so that all your practice in your target language is based on that topic.

In French, my current theme is art, so I:

  • active copy sections from a daily email newsletter about art

  • notice new art vocabulary in the newsletter and how it’s used

  • choose a painting to express write about

  • select another painting to 3-2-1 speak about

  • listen to podcasts on art

  • read the novels by Adrien Goetz about an art curator

  • watch films about artists

It’s like becoming an “expert” in that field.

Doing a balance of focused and fun activities linked to a topic not only ensures we make progress but keeps us motivated to carry on with language training.

Need support to set up and stick to your language project? I can help.
