The melody of English matters

It’s not just about how to pronounce vowels and consonants.

In language classes a lot of time is spent on learning basic sounds, vocabulary and grammar.

All very important.

But there’s usually not enough focus on the melody of English: its stress, tone and rhythm patterns.

Melody matters in English and signals meaning.

The speaker could be signalling:

  • A statement versus a question

  • Their opinion versus a fact

  • They’re pausing to take a breath versus coming to a stop

When the meaning and melody seem out of synch to listeners, they have trouble understanding the message.

Which leads to confusion, irritation and misunderstandings.

So the speaker needs to repeat or rephrase.

Clear speaking in English means the right stress, tone and intonation pattern to match your meaning.
