Not a natural at language learning?

Me neither and it doesn’t matter.

I once went to a fun introductory Chinese class where we were taught several useful expressions.

The next day I couldn’t remember any of them.

Because I’d only heard them but not seen them.

Some people can hear a new word or expression, repeat it and easily remember it.

I can’t.

I have to see it, write it, link it with an image and repeat.

But what I can do is detect the patterns of how a language is organised.

I see the sense of how a language works, which helps me understand how to fit vocabulary and verbs together.

I’m good at noticing patterns but have to practise listening a lot.

What about you?

What works for you and what doesn’t when learning a language?

If you’re not sure: experiment.

Try another app, use a language kit, make flashcards, go on YouTube, talk to yourself in the shower, do a language exchange, consult AI, listen and repeat using a transcript, read the news …

There are so many different ways to learn a language.

Find what suits you and you’ll make more progress.

Do you need suggestions and advice on how to make learning less of a slog and more successful? I can help.
