How I use podcasts to improve my French

Listening to interesting podcasts is a great way to notice that practice is making your language skills better.

I’m a jewellery fan.

So I was thrilled when I found out the Paris, capitale de la perle exhibition would be on during my visit later this year.

And then I came across a related podcast La Voix des Bijoux and was hooked.

The episodes tell the stories and secrets behind famous jewels.

They range from 9 to 16 minutes, making them a perfect length to practise my French.

Here’s what I do:

  1. Listen to an episode

  2. Listen while reading the transcript to check I’ve understood

  3. Note any new useful phrases

  4. Listen again to catch more details and the new words

  5. Sum up the episode’s main idea in one sentence

I’m working my way through the 9 seasons and am learning so much in French about one of my favourite topics — what a win-win!

BTW for jewellery fans: There’s an English version of this podcast called Voice of Jewels which means that even if your French isn’t so good yet, you can first listen in English and then in French. Knowing what the episode is about makes understanding easier.

What podcast are you listening to to practise your target language?

Learning on your own doesn’t mean learning alone.

I can help you set up and stick to your DIY language project.
