5 questions for a language learner in later life #16

What do people say about learning a language when they’re older?

Emma is Australian and has visited Vanuatu a few times. Now she’s retired, she’s planning more trips and has just started learning Bislama.

  1. How do you feel about learning Bislama?
I’m very excited even though I know it’s going to be a challenge at my age.

  2. What’s the hardest thing about learning Bislama?
Just getting back into learning mode. I haven’t done any language learning since my school days, so not for a long time.

  3. How do you overcome this now?
The material I’ve found online is right for what I want to learn and I’ve made a timetable to make sure I do something every day.

  4. What are your goals?
On my next visit, I want to be able to have basic conversations with locals when I’m out and about.

  5. What’s your advice for older people who want to learn a language?
Have an important reason why you want to learn and then you’ll be motivated to do something every day.
