5 questions about writing in English

Here’s some more insight into what people say about writing in English when it’s not their first language.

Adam is from the Czech Republic and works in IT. Here’s how he deals with writing in English.

  1. How do you feel about writing in English?
Depends on who I’m writing to. If it’s a friend, I just write and don’t worry about making spelling or grammar mistakes. They’ll work out what I mean. For anyone else, I always try to use SMS/iMessage because no one writes correctly. If I have to write an email, I start by apologising for my English. And for something really important, I tell my sister what I want to say and ask her to write it for me.

  2. What’s the hardest thing about writing in English?
Sitting down and actually writing something, anything.

  3. How do you overcome this?
By using my phone because it makes me less stressed to write.

  4. What are your writing goals?
I want to feel more comfortable when I write in English and I don't want to make the same basic mistakes all the time.

  5. What’s your advice for others who need to write in English?
Just do it. Copy short blog posts, then parts of articles, a page in a non-technical book and continue from there.
